5 Money Saving Tips!!!

Money as a student is tight, and the balance between uni, making money at some sort of job, and having a great social life is expensive. So here are some tips on the best ways to save money throughout your university experience.

1. Bring your own lunch to uni or work.

Whether it is left over pizza or a sandwich – spending five minutes in the morning preparing something could save you $10 – 20 a day!

Macquarie University is great with facilitating this as well, there are microwaves in the library, Muse, BaseLine and in the Atrium there are sandwich toasters as well! So take advantage of what the university has provided for you!

2. Make use of student discounts

They are everywhere, even if it doesn’t seem like it!
Some of the restaurant’s at Macquarie Centre have a 10 percent discount for students. Simply ask! Refer to our post on Cheap Eats which are available across uni as well!
Heaps of online shopping sites have student discounts, have a look at this site which offers heaps of discounts over a variety of sites: https://www.myunidays.com/

3. Arrive at Clubs/bars an hour earlier and miss the entry fee!

The earlier you get to clubs or bars the less the entry fee will be. Also if you are planning to get a taxi, after 10pm Taxi’s have a $6 surcharge – so you will be saving money at every turn.

4. Better yet – skip the city.

The city has exuberant prices - so skip it - here are some other options:
- Instead take your friends and a cheap bottle of wine to some of the great picnic spots across Sydney, such as Coogee Beach, or Lane Cove National Park.

- Cold out? Do a movie night at home, making a fort can be just as exciting in your 20s as it was when you were 10.
- Go bowling – a whole blog post will be dedicated to Strike Bowling soon!
- Host a cocktail night with your friends

5. Second hand text books!

Use the universities text book exchange, or other sites such as https://studentvip.com.au  to find great deals on text books – just make sure they are the right edition and in an okay condition when you receive them.
Then sell your textbooks once your done with them, and you can get some of that money back, to spend on much more important things, such as those expensive nights out in the city.

Every little bit helps!!
Devon.
